New to East Africa – guided ATV safaris at Lake Mburo N.P.

AFRICAN ATV SAFARIS have started operation taking small groups (max. 5) on game viewing safaris in the park. The safaris run twice every day.

Lake Mburo National Park is a beautiful area of varied landscapes, alive with interest and colour. It is located conveniently near to the Western Uganda Highway approximately 220km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. There are many species of animals and birds to be found in the park; herds of zebra, impala and eland, groups of waterbuck, buffalo and topi, families of warthogs and baboons, sometimes encountering a solitary oribi or klipspringer, flocks of egrets arrow across the lake, pairs of crested cranes around a mud hole, black-backed vultures in an acacia tree or circling high overhead. Over 300 species of bird have been recorded in the park. There are no elephant or lion in this park making it suitable for this type of safari.

RIDE WITH THE ANIMALS: African ATV Safaris offer a 2 hour (plus time spent on the learner circuit) Eland Track Safari or for the more adventurous a 4 hour safari following the Ruroko Track past a large Kopje with a stopover at Kazuma Hill Lookout and returning via the Lakeside Track.

Each trip starts with signing on and getting kitted out with overalls, helmet, goggles, a bandana and either gumboots or your own closed footwear. A briefing session is follows. Emphasis is placed on strictly adhering to Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations – in particular no off-track riding or speeding. If you came here to plough through the mud and race your friends you’ve made a mistake – these are game viewing safaris for small groups who want to get out into the bush and experience the sights, sounds, smells and feel of Africa without windows and a tin can around you.

The All Terrain Vehicles (Quad Bikes) used are very simple to ride. Semi-automatic 250cc machines with efficient silencers and very wide, low-pressure tyres for minimal impact on the trails. Learner / practice circuits have been setup beside the site. No previous experience is needed as the guides will train you in the basics and develop your skills along the way. We’ve had clients who have never driven any vehicle before manage fine.

An easy ride out along the main park trails ‘acclimatises’ you to the ATV and then we turn off onto the smaller game trails. Magic moments out in the bush, taking in the colours and sounds from the seat of your ATV. Meandering effortlessly along trails that wind through acacia forest, glimpses of animals through the trees, opening out into valleys with herds grazing in the open savannah plains. Some of the best photographic opportunities in Africa flash all around you. Cool bananas!

You are free to stop at any time and at a few points along the trail we all stop, switch off the engines and take in the unblemished sounds of pure African bush. Bottled water is carried by the guides – fruit juice and biscuits are served while overlooking the waterhole.

Great game viewing opportunities are certain. On our second trip we saw a leopard having a freshly killed impala for breakfast. That can’t be guaranteed but this will be one of the great rides of your life.

We are located just off the Zebra Track beside Kimbla-Mantana Luxury Tented Camp. Packages including an ATV Safari with accommodation and/or meals at the superb restaurant overlooking the lake, as well as other adventure options in the park; walking safaris, a scenic boat trip and night game-viewing safaris are available.

Bookings can also be made through Kimbla-Mantana African Safaris
