Commercial Filming Fees:
Commercial filming fee in this Category 'A' Protected Area is US$200- per person plus a refundable fee of US$1,000- when you provide UWA a copy of the film.

Getting there and away:
Public transport from Fort Portal to Kamwenge via Kanyanchu, Nkingo and Bigodi is available from the Kamwenge stage (next to the Fort Portal market) between 8am and 5pm. Private hire vehicles (roughly Ushs40,000-) can be arranged at the Taxi Park in Fort Portal.

Primate Lodge: Bookings through Great Lakes Safaris: 0414 267153, 0772 426368, email: gls@utlonline.co.ug. The accommodation and campsite formally managed by the National Park has been taken and is now managed under a concession agreement with the park. The site located in the National Park next to the Kanyanchu Visitors Center offers visitors a first hand opportunity to experince the wonders of the park from the door step of your accommodation. Primate Lodge's facilities include 8 large walk in safari tents with ensuite bathrooms. An extensive programme has been embarked on to remodel the former national parks bandas with the addition of bathroom and toilet facilities to each unit. A large restaurant and reception area is the centre piece of the lodge with a sunken fire pit to warm yourself around in the chill of an evening.

Kibale Forest Lodge: Tel 0312 276 878, email kitanda@infocom.co.ug. The lodge is located in Kanyanchu on the way to Bigodi Village where it commands a view of Kibale Forest National Park. The lodge presently offers 2 rooms in the main building and 5 large walk-in safari tents each with their own en-suite facilities including cold and hot water. A spacious retaurant and bar suppliment the facilities for vistiors.

Chimps' Nest: Tel. +256 (0)77 4669107 or email: info@chimpsnest.com. Chimps’ Nest is situated on the border of Kibale Forest, with private walking trails through the jungle. The lodge is located near Nyabubale, a small village between Nkingo and Bigodi only a 15-minute drive from Kanyanchu, the starting point of UWA chimp-tracking and other activities in Kibale Forest. Chimps’ Nest also borders the Bigodi Swamp.

Visitors are accommodated in either one of 6 self-contained cottages, self-contained tree house inside the forest, backpacker rooms, or the campsite. Backpackers and campers have sufficient access to flushing toilets, washbasins, and warm showers.

The restaurant and bar look out over the swamp and forest as does each of the accommodations all with their own private terrace.

Operated by Nature Lodges Uganda this tented camp is situated on the fringes of the Kibale Forest 2 kms from the Bigodi trading centre and the Bigodi Swamp much revered by birding enthusiasts. The camp comprises 7 walk-in furnished African safari style tents with bathroom and eco-toilet.

Safari Hotel: Nkingo Village 3 kms from National Park and 2 kms from Bigode Wetland Sanctuary. Follow the Kamwenge road from Fort Portal next to the Mpanga River market for 17 km and take the left fork for a further 21 km. Well sign-posted. Fort Portal - Safari Hotel 45 mins.

Chimpanzee Valley Resort: Located between Safari Hotel and Bigodi. CVR when it opens (currently under development March 2007) will provide visitors with comfortable accommodation, a private campsite set in 30 acres of land with it's own piece of remnant forest.

The above options offer the closest access to Kanyanchu for those wishing do a morning chimpanzee walk and are without their own transport. Accomodation is also available at CVK Resort, Lake Nyinbulitwa Country Resort, Lake Nkuruba, Chimpanzee Forest Guest House, Kitojo Tourist Home and Kasenda Beach. There are several additional sites around Lake Nyabikere and at Ndali Lodge as well in Fort Portal. Please read documents 'Fort Portal', and Crater Lakes Kabarole for information on these sites.

Location:
Kibale Forest NP covers an area of 766 km2. The park contains pristine lowland tropical rain forest, montane forest, and mixed tropical deciduous forest. There are small areas of grassland and swamp.

The visitors main interest in Kibale leans towards its enormous variety of primates and its families of habituated chimpanzees. 12 species of primate are resident in Kibale which is one of the highest primate densities in the world.

Kibale, with ancient trees up to 55 metres in height, is a wonderful place to experience the extraordinary diversity of life in a tropical rainforest.

Wildlife:
A system of trails has been developed within the park, and tour guides are available to guide visitors.

Kibale is most noted for its primate population. Some of these are red-tailed monkey, diademed monkey, blue monkey, white cheeked mangabey, olive baboon, chimpanzee, black, white and red colobus. Other mammals you might see are bushbuck, Harvey's red duiker, blue duiker, genet, bush pig, and African civet. More difficult to spot are buffalo, waterbuck, hippo, warthog, and giant forest hog. Forest Elephant have become more and more rare, and now are seldom seen, athough the signs of these elephants' presence is abundant.

There are 144 species of butterfly in the park.

Bird Life:
Bird life is very difficult to observe in the forest but on the fringes in open areas it is apparent there is substantial bird life. 325 species have been identified here.

Activities around Kibale Forest NP
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary: Entrance fee Ushs20,000- p/p effective 01 December 2002.
Rubber boots are available for hire. The above fee includes the guide fee.

With effect from 1st June 2008 entrance fees will increase to: Foreign tourists: Ushs30,000-, Foreign residents: Ushs25,000- and Ugandan nationals: Ushs10,000-.

The extra income will be utilised to improve the current facilities whereby the:
1) The “squat” toilet will be changed to a “sit-down” toilet
2) Wellingtons/rubber boots will be made available at no charge to visitors as opposed to hiring them
3) The Tree house will be renovated
4) A second trail circuit will be opened to avoid congestion, monotony and adverse environmental impacts.

The Bigode Wetland Sanctuary is situated some 5 kms from the visitors center at Kanyanchu outside the Kibale Forest National Park on the road to Kamwenge. This is an eco-tourism project run by a community based environmental organisation established in 1992. The projects revolves around activities in the Magombe Swamp a 3 sqkm area fed by the Magombe River.

The swamp is home to wide range of primates which includes Red Colobus and Black and White Colobus monkeys, Grey Checked Mangabey, Red-tailed monkey, LHoest, Vervet and Blue monkeys and Baboon.

Birding is a major activity around the swamp with paths cut and areas of the swamp board walked to give access to areas of the swamp that would be otherwise inaccessible. Several tree houses have also been constructed to give vantage over the swamp. Specialities for Bigode include Great Blue Turaco, Black Billed Turaco and White Spotted Crake.

The Village Walk: This activity also starts from the offices of the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and provides an interesting insight into the lives of the local community.
