"Experience Bwindi Impenetrable Forest at Nkuringo"

Nkuringo Campsite and adjoining Hammerkop Bunkhouse are located at 2161m above sea level on a hill overlooking a beautiful swath of the world renowned Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. This forest is home to the Nkuringo group of Mountain Gorillas habituated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

This gorilla family known as the Nkuringo group can be tracked directly from the Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite and Hammerkop Bunkhouse for those with tracking permits available to individuals and tour operators from the Uganda Wildlife Authority in Kampala. This is one of the worlds most amazing wildlife spectacles and should not be missed by visitors to the region.

With panoramic views of the majestic volcanoes of the Virunga chain the campsite and bunk house offer budget travellers a unique opportunity to experience the wonders of Nkuringo certainly one of the remotest locations in the country.

Accommodation 2010

Accommodation is provided in the campsite in a single simple twin bedded banda. The Hammerkop Bunkhouse offers 5 twin bedded rooms.

Facilities

The campsite has a simple restaurant with wholesome freshly cooked meals with foodstuffs purchased locally in the nearby trading centre. For those self-catering an eating shelter is available for cooking and food preparation.

Hot water is prepared for bathing but please be aware water is a scare commodity in Nkuringo by virtue of the campsite and bunkhouse sitting on a ridge some 600m above the Kashasha river. Porters carry water from the river for visitors. Rain water harvesting from the roof of the bunkhouse is how we collect water during the rain season.

Getting there and away

For those travelling by public means Nkuringo is accessed from the Kabale - Kisoro road. Take the public bus from Kampala to Kisoro a 500KM journey, approximately 11 hours. On arrival in Kisoro you will need to arrange a private hire vehicle to take you to Nkuringo some 90 minutes journey (36 kms) Ushs70,000- each way.

Public transport to and from Kisoro is available on Monday's and Thursday's, market days in Kisoro. The vehicle leaves Nkuringo at first light in the morning returning at days end. The vehicle returns to Nkuringo from the Rubuguri Car Parking yard at Mr Kanyaruju's house. The one way fare is Ushs4,000-. Please note this vehicle is transporting villagers and their goods so is not for people expecting any degree of comfort.

Visitors can also get to Nkuringo by travelling to Buhoma on the direct daily bus from Kampala. After staying in Buhoma one night the next day walk through the park 12kms 5 to 7 hours to Nkuringo with a ranger/guide. You can return the same way or proceed to Kisoro. National Park and ranger/guide fees must be paid.

Activities - Nkuringo Village Community Walk

Local guides from Nkuringo Community motivated by the success of the 'Village Walk' at Buhoma in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest have now developed a community village walk for visitors to Nkuringo. This guided walk provides visitors to Nkuringo as an additional activity to gorilla tracking.

The community walk forms part of the walking safari between Kisoro and Buhoma for those visitors travelling with Nkuringo Walking Safaris.

The duration of the walk is 3 to 4 hours and starts at Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite.

Highlights include:

  • Nkuringo Hill View point - Experience a 360 degree view of Bwindi, the Virunga and far into the Dr Congo
  • Be introduced to local trees and birds
  • School visit - Be welcomed at our primary school
  • Observe sorghum beer being produced
  • Visit a homestead to sample some local foods
  • See the local Blacksmith at work
  • Visit the Women's craft centre
  • Enjoy dances performed by the the local Orphan's group

A charge of US$10- per person is levied with all monies going back to community support projects.
