The Source of the Nile Gardens and Speke Memorial Site is a 17 acre site marking the very place here on July 28, 1862 John Hanning Speke declared that he could see the 'old father Nile' emerge from it's source, the Victoria Nyanza. An obelisk monument was raised on the spot where he stood on the west bank of the Nile to mark that historical event.
The view described by Speke has lost none of its beauty, mystic or grandeur - the peaceful surge of this fabulous river is undiminished even though the Rippon Falls has been silenced after the construction of the Owen Falls hydro-electric dam.
The Source of the Nile is one of Uganda's main tourist attractions
The serene gardens are very spacious with a variety of indigenous birds and a number of monkeys that appear at particular times of the day.
There is a beautiful view over the Lake Victoria the world's largest fresh water lake and the source of the River Nile at this very spot.
Our information centre offers facts about the River Nile. the history and culture of Uganda, birds, plants and much more.
Source of the Nile Gardens is ideal for school excursions and families. A variety of snacks and drinks are available. We arrange boat trips, you can camp, have a picnic or hold a party for a small fee. Our monthly Full moon party includes a meal, a talk about the moon and the stars, plus traditional folk stories, music and dance around the campfire.
